Kerbside Collection tease new album with first single ‘Shivers’
Australian jazz-funk outfit Kerbside Collection release new single and video “Shivers”, a first taste of their forthcoming fifth album Cue Blue. The track is a raw, stripped-back session that reconnects the group with the dusty analogue grooves and deep-pocket rhythm work that first defined their early releases. Built around a lean quartet setup of guitar, bass, drums and brass, it deliberately steps away from heavier arrangements in favour of a tighter, more immediate sound rooted in live interplay, greasy rhythm sections and vintage jazz-funk textures.
The single channels the oldschool aesthetic and feel of the band’s earliest recordings — particularly the cult-favourite 2013 debut Mind The Curb — while also revisiting the warm, home-recorded feel and rare groove sensibilities explored throughout later releases like Trash Or Treasure. Across their catalogue, the Brisbane ensemble have blended gritty jazz-funk, deep funk, soul, rare groove and library music influences into a distinctly sunburnt Australian take on late-60s and early-70s instrumental music.
On “Shivers” those influences are worn proudly: the hypnotic syncopation of The Meters, the blues-soaked guitar phrasing of Boogaloo Joe Jones, the greasy soul-jazz attack of Melvin Sparks and the punchy groove arrangements associated with Billy Butler. The result is a slow-burning instrumental cut packed with crunchy guitar tones, tight drum breaks, rubbery basslines and smoky brass motifs that feel equally at home in a dimly lit jazz club, a crate-digger’s headphones or a vintage DJ set.
