De-Phazz remix Ella Fitzgerald’s classic ‘This Girl’s In Love With You’
MPS and De-Phazz. Two musical institutions. Upcoming new album belooped finally brings together what has attracted many hipsters to the dance floors of Hamburg, Honolulu, Munich and Miami over the past decades. On the one hand, there is the tongue-in-cheek playfulness of the lounge export hit De-Phazz. On the other, there is the archive of legendary German record label MPS, which has cult status among DJs and rare groove hunters. Old meets new, digital meets analogue. What remains is a unique atmosphere. As well as the unmistakable sense of groove and wonderful melodies that connect Brunner-Schwer’s productions between the 1960s and 1980s with the electro-organic vibes of De-Phazz.
For this extraordinary project, De-Phazz founder Pit Baumgartner has been granted access to the archives of Musik Produktion Schwarzwald. With a keen sense for grooves and melodies, the sound architect has carefully restored the work of global stars such as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and George Duke, bringing it into the contemporary sound. The result is a musical collage that combines the “Most Perfect Sound” of the 60s up to the 80s with the electro-organic vibes of the lounge pioneers, proving that timeless jazz and modern dance floors are no contradiction.
The first two singles have landed: a warm and elegant reimagination of Ella Fitzgerald’s “This Girl’s in Love with You”, taken from the MPS record Sunshine of Your Love, and a playful take on George Shearing’s “Continental”, from the album Continental Experience, with guest vocals by Malia.
Baumgartner says “Of course, I thoroughly enjoyed the creative freedom MPS gave me: looping, filtering, or playing around with various effects. With Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘This Girl in Love’, I naturally had great respect for the legend and its history. With this track, the trick was to hold back tastefully and intervene only ‘cosmetically’ – that is, to wrap the recording in warm frequencies and adapt it to current listening habits; in other words, to add a bit more punch to the bass and drums”.
