Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble releases single & video ‘Time’

Born out of Chicago’s rich musical heritage, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have spent more than two decades redefining what a brass band can sound like. Blending the improvisational spirit of jazz with the infectious energy of funk, soul and hip-hop, the eight-piece ensemble have built an international reputation for their powerful live performances, genre-defying sound and fiercely independent approach to music.

On their new single, “Time”, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble turn inward, reflecting on the childhood experiences, musical discipline and lasting bonds that shaped them. Written, arranged and produced by trombonist and co-founding member Seba Graves, the track traces the ensemble’s journey from learning their instruments as young children to discovering how profoundly music could shape their lives — offering a personal introduction to the story behind their forthcoming album, PPL.

This story has deep roots. As the sons of Phil Cohran — the influential Chicago composer, educator and former member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra — Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s core members came of age immersed in jazz and experimental music, while absorbing the funk, soul and hip-hop sounds of their surroundings. Their early musical education helped establish the discipline and collective instinct that would become hallmarks of their sound.

That foundation would eventually take the group far beyond its hometown. Building their reputation through street performances, self-released recordings and an uncompromising commitment to their own musical vision, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s journey has seen them collaborate with artists including Yasin Bey, Gorillaz, Erykah Badu and Prince, while establishing them as a distinctive force in contemporary brass music. Their music carries forward a rich Chicago musical heritage while continuing to push beyond genre boundaries.

“Time” looks back at the beginnings of that journey without remaining fixed in the past. Instead, it connects the experiences that shaped the brothers as young musicians with the people and artists they have become, reflecting on the value of time spent learning, growing and creating together. The track’s recording process also reflects the ensemble’s wider creative connections: the instrumental performances were recorded in Dublin, while additional vocals by Neal were recorded separately in Chicago, linking two cities through a shared musical vision.

As the introduction to their forthcoming album, PPL, “Time” opens a new chapter in Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s recorded work while returning to something fundamental to their identity. More than two decades into their journey, the brothers continue to draw on the musical foundations that brought them together, carrying that inheritance forward while making room for new perspectives.
