A high enery jazz-funk workout in ‘The Favourite’ by The Filthy Six
Grammy-winning trumpeter Nick Etwell and his incendiary soul jazz/funk sextet The Filthy Six return with new single “The Favourite”, a high-energy, old-school funk workout that sets a deep groove in motion, with James’ guitar solo venturing into psychedelic territory before Mark’s filthy tenor sax responds in kind. Special guest Snowboy brings the heat on congas alongside Simon’s heavy grooves, driving a tasty drum break before the band brings it all home.
This is the last single taken from The Filthy Six’s forthcoming fourth full-length album, Return of The Swagger Junkies: Vol 1., out 27 November 2026 on Denver-based label Color Red. The new album captures the band’s unmistakable blend of vintage soul, heavyweight grooves and adventurous musicianship. “The Favourite” offers a potent taste of the Filthy Six sound: deep rhythms, psychedelic flourishes and a generous dose of funk-fuelled filth.
London-based Etwell has enjoyed a varied career working with the likes of David Axelrod, Beck, Foo Fighters, Noel Gallagher and Tom Jones. Alongside his session work, however, his enduring passion for the rich diaspora of Black American music has remained a defining influence, with credits spanning legendary artists Carla Thomas, Ronnie Spector, Mavis Staples and Fred Wesley, as well as contemporary voices Jill Scott, Thee Sacred Souls, Jon Cleary and Adrian Quesada.
With three albums released on legendary UK label Acid Jazz during the 2010s, The Filthy Six return with their second outing for Color Red, drawing on the Blue Note and Prestige traditions of Lou Donaldson, Grant Green and Jack McDuff while bringing the Soul Jazz sound firmly into the present. Their analogue-driven instrumental soul draws freely from funk, blues and Latin Boogaloo, creating music that moves both body and mind.
“The Favourite” out digitally on Oct. 23rd 2026 via Color Red
