YORK

What they say…

“A true pinnacle of contemporary jazz groove!”

Based in Hannover, Germany, YORK is a sought-after saxophonist and flutist who is often booked in the studio both in bands and as a guest soloist. He has appeared in over 100 CD publications and has collaborated with, among others, Phil Collins, Randy Crawford, Inner Cycle, Quincy Jones, Towa Tei, Ziggy Marley, and many many more.

YORK grew up in Bremen where he would tune into the radio after school and listen to his heroes: Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, Joni Mitchell, Deodato, Flora Purim, Herbie Mann, George Benson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Oregon, Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder….the list goes on.

At 12 YORK was given a flute by his mother. Neglecting his homework, he’d practice by replicating the music he heard on the radio. When the first band came along, the sax took the place of the flute, and YORK became proficient in both instruments, growing in artistry by playing show after show.

In 1986 YORK moved to Hannover where he decided to commit himself whole-heartedly to music. His love affair with performing developed into a successful career spanning nearly 3 decades and numerous accolades. As founder/producer and musician of the German/South-African project Culture Clan, York won 2 awards and scored one No.1 hit in South Africa in 2004.

Performing with Randy Crawford is another highlight of YORK’s career. With live performances and 2 CD productions together, he remembers this collaboration fondly. Oh! A Jam session with Stevie Wonder? You bet! Stevie joined York’s Jazz Quartet in a hotel bar for a hot late night session one night. What a cool guy!

Currently, YORK is happy to focus his efforts on composing, producing and performing as a solo artist. His juicy collection of soulful jazz tunes, The SoulJazzExperience Vol.1 will be released soon. (It does what it says on the tin, but oh so well, you’ll want to come back for more….)
