Nick Pride & The Pimptones

What they say…

“In a sea of funky soundalikes… [they stand] out for the magnificent guest vocals and the dance-floor friendly jazzy arrangement. Mighty Mighty!”

Dean Rudland (Acid Jazz / Kent / BGP)

Newcastle’s slickest funk & soul outfit Nick Pride & The Pimptones craft a funky stew of tight grooves and beefy breaks with slick arrangements that have all the harmonic sophistication the jazz cats love, delivered with a heavyweight punch that keeps the dance floor moving.

The band formed in 2007 led by guitarist, composer, arranger and producer Nick Pride. The group first caught the eye of funk fans with their single “Deeper Pimp” on Smoove‘s label Wack Records, which was championed by Craig Charles (Funk&Soul Show on BBC6), Francesco Adinolfi (Radio Rai 2) and Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz) among others. The band was  then signed to respected Italian label Record Kicks for the release of their debut album “Midnight Feast Of Jazz” in 2011, which went on to enjoy heavy rotation on various stations worldwide. Tracks from that first full-length later enjoyed the remix treatment by the likes of TM Duke, Diesler, Smoove and Renegades of Jazz, leading to the release of “Remixed Feast Of Jazz” via digital download in 2012.

In between recording Nick Pride & The Pimptones have also been busy bringing their brand of jazz-funk to live shows throughout Europe. Their performance kicks off with punchy instrumentals, to then make way for sweetly crafted soul music as they are joined onstage by many fantastic guest vocalists, such as Zoe Gilby or Jess Roberts, and most recently with the steady presence of Beth Macari.

In 2013 The Pimptones released their follow-up album “Rejuiced Phat Shake” on Hamburg’s Légère Recordings, which shifted the focus from jazz to soul, and once again featured finely crafted melodies, dance-floor beats, killer hooks and a slew of guests on vocals. This sophomore release won enthusiastic reviews from Crack magazine (UK), Soul Bag mag (France), NE Volume (UK) and more, confirming the band’s standing as one of the most exciting outfits in contemporary funk & soul.

Anticipation now builds for new Pimptones album “Go Deep”, scheduled for release in Summer fo 2016!
