Kerbside Collection’s ‘Trash Or Treasure’ gets the remix treatment

Aussie rare groove ensemble Kerbside Collection’s second album of instrumental funk and jazz grooves “Trash Or Treasure” (released May 2015) gets the remix, rework and re-use treatment with a variety of re-interpretations with everything from downtempo hip-hop/neo-soul and dusty analogue lounge beats, to fuzzy, Balearic electronic club workouts and even some broken beat flavors.

Kicking off with Brisbane based multi-instrumentalist (and Jordan Rakei’s guitarist) Street Rat’s modern neo- soul, jazzy flavored opening track “Walk The Talk” the album follows with JNBO (bass player of The Cactus Channel) who adds his unique wonky, analogue and quirky touch to the titletrack. Next up is DJ/Producer Sampology with the sitar disco vibes of “Strawberry Fields”, taking the track into sizzling Balearic, club territory perfect for summer festivals and hazy end-of-night vibes.

Kerbside drummer Paprika takes the coastal groove of “Bogangar” to the afro side with his afro-dub version, while also providing two other remixes, a re-rub of “Kojak The Frog” that conjures up some vintage Mr. Scruff, Diesler and Quantic sounds, and a rework of title track “Trash Or Treasure” that takes it into future jazz / broken beat territory with added percussion, moog bass and a surprise heavy change up at the end, almost reflective of some classic Fat Freddy’s Drop!

Renegades of Jazz adds his trademark funky breaks and beats to the b-boy ready “Quicksilver” while another local Brisbane producer TwoDee delivers an 80s, electro break flavored re-work of “Rabbit Hole”. Melbourne based Kallellak (bass player for The Seven Ups and Wvr Bvby) gives “Cypress” a crazy chopped up and stretched out rework for fans of DJ Krush, Amon Tobin and DJ Shadow.

The release closes with Vinnie Laduce’s cruisy vocoder and lo-fi indie beats reconstruction of “Shake ’n’ Bake” and a frenetic bongo breakbeat version of “Cypress” – to make up for a wide range and variety of flavours and re-approaches to the bands dusty jazz and funk stylings.
