Tropical afro-latin grooves in ‘Tempo Passa’ by Grupo Pilon

“Tempo Passa” is an upbeat and uptempo slice of tropical afro-latin goodness that talks about the passing of time and the hope of things to come and is aimed for the most animated dancefloors. It is the second single lifted from upcoming new album Nu Sta Li by Grupo Pilon, a Luxembourg-based band of Cabo Verdean expats that has been breathing new life into their homeland’s music scene since the 1990s.With funaná at the core of their sound, the group honors the rich musical traditions of Cabo Verde while delivering an updated, energetic, and sensual version of the genre for today’s global audiences.

Cabo Verde, a West African archipelago known for its vibrant musical culture, has long used music as a form of identity and resistance. Following a severe drought and economic crisis in the 1970s, many Cabo Verdeans migrated to Europe, bringing with them morna, coladeira, batuque, finaçon, and funaná—a rhythmic style originally played with accordion and ferrinho (a metal scraper used percussively).

Following in the footsteps of influential groups like Bulimundo, Grupo Pilón modernizes funaná with a dynamic lineup that incorporates drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals. Led by drummer Tony Furtado Gomes—instrumental in the band’s recent revival—the group blends traditional elements with contemporary flair.

Nu Sta Li is the result of years of experience, tours across Europe and the U.S., and performances including a landmark concert for 4,000 people in Praia, Cabo Verde’s capital. The album captures this journey across eight tracks full of warmth, rhythm, and cultural pride.
