Soul Sugar meets Dub Shepherds on Mayfield’s ‘Give Me Your Love’

Curtis Mayfield is every soul music fan’s favorite; the beauty of his songs, his falsetto voice and his social engagement made him one of the most unique artists of the 70s, so it’s not surprising that many of his songs have been covered by the sweetest voices in Jamaica. It’s said his group The Impressions was a notable influence on Bob Marley and The Wailers, who modelled their singing/harmony style on them and in part borrowed their look …

Guillaume Metenier aka Soul Sugar loves doing reggae versions of soul songs and has previously released quite a few gems in the genre featuring Jamaican rising star Leo Carmichael on vocals, with songs like Timmy Thomas‘ “Why Can’t We Live Together”, Marvin Gaye‘s “I Want You”, Luther Vandross classic “Never Too Much”, and another magnificent cover of Curtis with “The Makings Of You”

Fast forward to 2025 and this time around Guillaume and his vintage keyboards armoury teams up with the Dub Shepherds crew composed of singer and multi instrumentalist Jolly Joseph, Dr Charty on bass and Jahno on drums to deliver a full album of original songs and covers captured live in studio on analog gear.

The reggae version of Curtis Mayfield‘s classic “Give Me Your Love” is the first single from the forthcoming album Blue House Rockin’ due for release in September 2025 by Soul Sugar meets Dub Shepherds. This first single will be available on vinyl 7’ with a heavy dub mix on the B-side. The recordings were mixed by the Dub Shepherds at Bat Records studio on 24 tracks analog tape machine.
