‘Sables Du Temps’, psychedelic afro-latin funk grooves by J. Dynamite
After more than two decades spent shaping modern soul, funk and rare grooves from behind the scenes, Jeff Silverman—better known as J. Dynamite—is stepping forward with a vision entirely his own. His new single, “Sables du Temps” is a hypnotic slice of instrumental Afro-Latin funk that kicks off with a crunchy breakbeat before settling into a deep, infectious groove. Congas weave through the rhythm section, Fender Rhodes and guitar bring warmth and movement, while Moog synthesizer pushes the track into psychedelic territory. Above it all, a tightly arranged horn section adds color and drama, giving the track a widescreen, almost filmic quality.
“Sables Du Temps” follows on from “Re-Education“ as the second single from J.Dynamite’s forthcoming full-length, The Powers That Be, scheduled for release in October 2026. Together, the tracks introduce an album that marks a significant new chapter for an artist whose fingerprints have been all over the modern soul and funk landscape. As co-founder of Truth & Soul Records alongside Leon Michels, Silverman was instrumental in the New York soul revival that grew from the interconnected worlds of Desco, Soul Fire, Truth & Soul and Daptone. He subsequently became a producer on Aloe Blacc’s breakthrough album Good Things and later brought his ear for groove and atmosphere to the world of video-game music, serving as a soundtrack producer for Rockstar Games on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
With The Powers That Be, Silverman reunites with many of the musicians who helped define the funk & soul resurgence, and “Sables Du Temps” boasts a lineup with decades of experience across that scene. That history runs particularly deep with guitarist Luke O’Malley, who has worked with Silverman since the Truth & Soul days and has also been a member of Antibalas, while drummer and bassist Miles Arntzen brings his own history with Antibalas and his later work with EMEFE. Keyboardist Jake Pinto, of Magic City Hippies, was instrumental in translating Silverman’s ideas into sound, while Michael ‘Treetop’ Voss from Germany’s deep funk kings Poets Of Rhythm contributes both playing and arrangement to the project.
Despite the history of the musicians involved, The Powers That Be is deliberately not a nostalgia trip. Silverman turns the accumulated experience of a long career into something immediate, personal and forward-looking. The album is not a retrospective, but a chance to hear what happens when a producer with decades of musical history finally puts his own name at the center of the record.
