Deep funk & soul on new double-sider 45 by Cookin’ On 3 Burners
Melbourne’s deep funk torchbearers Cookin’ On 3 Burners are back with a new double-sider 45, with Hammond funk on the a-side’s “Cookin’ The Books” and foot stompin’ midetempo soul on the flip’s “Give A Little Bit More feat. Stella Angelico”.
“Cookin’ The Books” is a gritty, upbeat Hammond-led instrumental cooked low and slow in the heart of Melbourne’s funk scene. It’s all business up front – deep pocket drums, greasy organ licks, and guitar work that snaps and struts. No vocals, no fat – just a raw funk workout that’s ready for the crates. This is also the title track of the upcoming new album by the band, scheduled to drop at the end of October!
“Give a Little Bit More feat. Stella Angelico” is a classic-feeling, midtempo soul joint with a message that cuts deep. Longtime collaborator Stella Angelico delivers a powerful vocal performance about generosity, empathy, and turning things around when it matters. With uplifting lyrics, smooth horns, and a groove that nods to vintage 45s, this one lands straight in the heart – timeless, spiritual, and soul-drenched.
“This release captures us in our element”, says organist Jake Mason. “It’s about chasing that moment in the room when the groove locks, and then giving it a little bit more”.
This 7” is a taste of the band’s upcoming studio album – also titled Cookin’ The Books – set to drop October 31st. With early spins from BBC6’s Craig Charles, glowing praise from Dusty Groove, Wax Poetics, and Rolling Stone Australia, and a global tour slated for 2026, this is a must-have for soul and funk fans worldwide!
