Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 release new single / video ‘Tonnau Ar Tonnau’

Continuing their acclaimed fusion of Welsh lyricism and Brazilian rhythms, Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 announce their vibrant new album Haf, marking the band’s third release in little over twelve months. The full-length is released on vinyl and CD now but available to be bought exclusively at their live shows on bandcamp and Bubblewrap Collective, with a subsequent digital release in February 2026.

The album’s first single is “Tonnau Ar Tonnau” (‘Waves Upon Waves’ in welsh), pays homage to the soulful sounds of 1970s Brazilian music, particularly Cassiano’s iconic track “Onda” (‘Wave’). Recorded with a group of exceptional Brazilian musicians, the song captures the spirit of that era with a contemporary twist.

While mixing the album in Rio de Janeiro, producer Kassin learned of Cassiano’s influence on Ellis and, by chance, contacted the original bass player (Paulo César Barros) from “Onda”. Within the hour, he joined the session – bringing an authentic touch of Brazilian soul history to the recording.

The track also features the rich, soulful vocals of Miriam Isaac, the only other non-Brazilian performer on the song, adding a unique, cross-cultural dimension to the sound.
